CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – For the third consecutive year, the Rossview High Hawks have won the region 7-3A championship game after overcoming Clarksville High School by a score of 1-0 on Thursday, Oct. 17. Unlike the last time these two teams met, scoring was hard to come by, but it was Rossview’s own Cassaundra Villa that scored the lone goal of the game, which proved to be the difference in the end.
Early on, neither offense could put the ball in the back of the net. Both defensive backfields were playing hard, while each goalie was pitching a shutout. Rossview High head coach Connie Castleman was impressed with her defense and thought they responded well to adversity.
“They dug deep,” Castleman told Clarksville Now. “We had to make subs, but even when we did, they figured it out. They communicated, they trusted each other, and we believed. Mya (Martin) is a stonewall; she made some fantastic saves tonight.”
The start of the second half was more of the same, but the Wildcats dominated possession early but still couldn’t connect. Then, the Hawks took advantage of a counterattack, and off of a throw-in, Cassaundra Villa launched a shot from 20 yards out, and it landed in the top-right corner of the net. With the shot, Villa clinched the Hawks 1-0 victory, and their third consecutive region championship.
What’s next
For Clarksville High, it’s not the result they wanted, but the team remains alive and will travel to Houston High School on Saturday, Oct. 19, for a chance to advance to the state tournament.
“My girls upheld their character and played tough,” said Clarksville High head coach Sara Kluttz. “It was a great match, and I’m proud of the girls. It just wasn’t our night. Any time you lace up the cleats, there’s a chance, and we’ll get one more game together at least; we’re thankful for that.”
As for Rossview High, they’ll host Collierville for the third straight year in a sub-state matchup. The Dragons have defeated the Hawks the last two years, but Rossview is hoping this time around will be different.
“We get to play at home, that’s huge,” said Castleman. “We see Collierville, that’s what standing between us and making it to state for the first time in program history. We just have to show up and know we have the ability to win that game. Let’s see what happens.”
