River Radamus led the U.S. with a 10th-place finish in a World Cup giant slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland on Sunday.
It was the 11th-career top-10 result for Radamus, who was fourth in Adelboden last lear. The Edwards skier took advantage of the more speed-friendly second run course setup, moving up nine places from his first-run position. Still, he left the Swiss slope feeling “not completely satisfied.”
“As always, the last pitch was challenging and it was a place to separate time-wise,” he told U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s Sierra Ryder. “I was proud of my second run and overall much better performance. I will take that into Wengen. Hoping to soon put down two good runs in a row.”
The host nation enjoyed watching four Swiss athletes ski into the top-7. Marco Odermatt led the way, winning for a fourth-straight time on the Chuenisbaergli course with a two-run time of 2 minutes, 27.55 seconds. His Swiss teammate, Loic Meillard (2:27.75), followed in second while Luca De Aliprandini (2:28.24) of Italy rounded out the podium.
“Every year it’s incredible to win here. The crowd, the fans, they are so loud, it’s so nice to ski here,” Odermatt told FIS. “The second run was perfect for me, a little bit more speed. You could let the skis go and this is what I like. I took more risks, and that was a problem in the first run — I didn’t feel so good from the setup to risk it.”
Radamus — who secured two top-10s this year at the Birds of Prey World Cup in December — currently sits in 13th in the GS standings and 25th in the overall. The next GS on the World Cup calendar is a night event in Schladming on Jan. 28, but speed and slalom skiers will head to Wengen for a downhill, super-G and slalom Jan. 17-19.
