Rebecca Odato proud to represent Kenya at FIFA U17 Women's World Cup – The Eastleigh Voice News

By |
Rebecca Odato, a young talent with Kenya's Junior Starlets, reflects proudly on her journey to the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. From representing her country on the world stage to inspiring her community in Busia, Odato shares her ambitions and highlights the impact of international exposure on her budding football career.

Rebecca Odato, a rising star with Kenya’s Junior Starlets, is proud to have represented her country at the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. The young midfielder says the tournament has boosted her confidence and raised her profile, both as a player and at home in Busia.

“People now speak my name with respect,” Odato said, adding that the experience has motivated her to pursue more international opportunities.

The Dagoreti Mixed Secondary School student describes playing in the World Cup as a dream come true. “I’m proud of this achievement. It’s no small feat, and I thank God for this opportunity,” she said. Her family and the wider Teso community are thrilled as well, as Odato has made history as the first family and community member to reach the World Cup stage.

Odato has long aspired to make her mark, drawing inspiration from her two football-playing brothers and her father, who once participated in Ugandan leagues. Currently playing for Kangemi Ladies FC, she has gained valuable experience facing teams like England and North Korea, although she missed Kenya’s victory against Mexico due to yellow card suspensions.

Odato admired England’s style of play, saying, “They know football. I hope they win the trophy, and I dream of joining a big European club like them someday. My goal is to excel and improve my family’s life.”

She also highlighted the need for increased support for the Junior Starlets, similar to what European teams receive. “Early preparations, media training, financial backing, and proper infrastructure make a big difference,” she noted.

Odato wore jersey number 20 for the tournament, explaining that her usual number 8 is in high demand. Off the field, she enjoys history at school, thanks to a friendly teacher, and was honored by a visit from Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen before the tournament.

Looking ahead, Odato dreams of playing for Arsenal Women FC, with Police Bullets FC player Mercy Njeri and Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard as her role models.
