KUTZTOWN, Pa. – For the second time in as many years, the Kutztown women’s soccer team will face the Gannon Golden Knights in the semifinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship, this time at Gannon’s McConnell Family Stadium on Friday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m., to earn the right to play for the PSAC Championship on Sunday.
The third-seeded Golden Bears (10-3-6, 7-3-6 PSAC East) look to take down the West’s top seed in Gannon (14-0-4, 10-0-4 PSAC West), a squad that boasts just four ties on the season against California (Pa.), Slippery Rock and Indiana (Pa.) (twice). They have shut out 13 of their 18 opponents, including a three-goal victory against Pitt-Johnstown in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
Despite their success this season, the Golden Knights may be up against their toughest defensive test on Friday.
Kutztown has relied on their stout defensive to reach this stage, a unit headlined by reigning United Soccer Coaches honorees in First-Team All-American Bridget Curtis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and Second Team All-Atlantic Region selection Dana Wentz (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley). Their midfield, led by reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year Katelyn Economopoulos (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and graduate student Taylor Rapel (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), has been a thorn in opponents’ sides while controlling the pace of play in a majority of their matches this season.
The Golden Bears are coming off a 1-0 victory over reigning conference champion West Chester in the opening round, eliminating the same program that bounced them in the second round of last year’s NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship.
KU looks to avenge a 2023 postseason loss for the second straight game, as Gannon topped last year’s undefeated Kutztown team at Keystone Field by a 2-0 margin in the semifinal round of last year’s PSAC Championship tournament.
Tickets can be purchased through the site linked above. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students (K-12). Students from PSAC institutions are free with a valid student ID. Children who have not yet reached kindergarten (Pre-K) are also free. PSAC passes will be accepted.
The livestream and stats links can be found above, along with the conference’s tournament central and more information about the tournament’s host, Gannon University.
The matchup between Kutztown and Gannon will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday. The other semifinal game between the East’s top-seeded Shepherd and the West’s third-seeded Slippery Rock is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The PSAC Women’s Soccer Championship game will be played between the winners of both games at Gannon on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m.
