The Roaring Fork High School girls soccer team led the way on Thursday, rolling 6-0 over No. 23 Longmont in the first round of the Class 3A state tournament in Carbondale.
Seeded No. 10, the Rams (9-4-3 overall) advance to face No. 7 Manitou Springs in the second round on Saturday. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. in Manitou Springs.
Basalt girls soccer put together an impressive showing in their first-round game on Thursday, but ultimately lost 8-7 in double overtime at No. 13 Eagle Ridge Academy. The Warriors (8-7 overall) will play No. 4 Delta in the second round. BHS, seeded No. 20, finishes the season 6-9-1 overall.
Aspen girls soccer had its season end Thursday with a first-round playoff loss at No. 3 Kent Denver, 8-0. The Sun Devils (12-3-1) advance in the 3A bracket to face No. 14 Salida in the second round. The Skiers, seeded No. 30 in the 32-team field, finish the season 5-10-1 overall.
The Aspen girls lacrosse team couldn’t overcome No. 7 seed Green Mountain in their Class 4A second-round playoff game on Thursday, falling 20-9 at JeffCo Stadium in Lakewood.
The Rams (11-5), who had a first-round bye, will play No. 2 Evergreen in the quarterfinals. The Skiers, seeded No. 10, finish 11-6 overall in their first season under head coach Kaely Wolf.
Roaring Fork girls lacrosse also had their season come to an end with a second-round loss at No. 6 Northfield, 21-13. The Nighthawks (12-3) will play No. 3 Battle Mountain in the quarterfinals. The Rams, seeded No. 11, finish 10-6 overall in their first season under coach Drew Kitchell.
Boys lacrosse second-round games are Friday night across the state. No. 15-seeded Aspen (9-7), following Tuesday’s first-round win over Grand Junction, plays at No. 2 Cheyenne Mountain (12-2). Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Colorado Springs.
No. 21 seed Glenwood Springs lost in the first round to No. 12 Windsor, 16-8.
The Aspen girls tennis season came to an end Thursday with their lone state qualifier competing in the Class 3A finals in Colorado Springs.
Playing at No. 2 singles, AHS junior Greta Holton lost her first-round matchup to Timnath’s Sarah Daniels, falling 6-1, 6-4. Daniels then lost to Peak to Peak’s Sydney Lewis in the second round.
Aspen baseball’s regular season continued Thursday with a 12-2 win over visiting Grand Valley. Basalt baseball (7-13 overall) lost Wednesday to Rifle, 8-0, with a pair of home games coming up Saturday against Delta.
Following a home doubleheader against Olathe on Saturday, Aspen (9-10-1) will close out the season on Tuesday with a game at Basalt, which was postponed from this past week due to weather.
Roaring Fork baseball beat Cedaredge on Thursday, 9-6, to improve to 10-12 overall. The Rams close out their season on Saturday against North Fork.
All three local teams currently sit on the bubble for making regional play.
The Junior Gents high school rugby team is slated to play in the Division II state championship on Saturday at Infinity Park in Glendale, outside Denver.
The Junior Gents beat PAC/Dakota Ridge in the semifinals — which was also the first round of the playoffs — this past weekend to advance to the final against Hammers Rugby.
The Junior Gents are a spinoff of the Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby Club and competes at the high school level through Colorado Rugby. Players come from all over the Roaring Fork Valley and surrounding communities. Much like girls hockey, rugby is not an official CHSAA sport.
