The Skinny: It’s been another solid season for the Abingdon Falcons, who rely on a balanced attack. Head coach Brian Butler wasn’t sure what to expect from his squad when the season started, but AHS has played its way to the region’s second seed. “I have coached this senior group of players for a long time before I became head coach at Abingdon High School,” Butler said. “Considering we are only playing one player in their same starting position from last year, I have been impressed with the quality of soccer this team plays and how hard they work for this program. Their strength comes from playing with each other for a long time now and being a unit who values the program and understanding what it takes to be successful on and off the field.” … Abingdon hasn’t played since defeating Gate City, 2-1, in triple overtime in the finals of the Mountain 7 District tournament on May 16. … Mason Sollien (37 goals, six assists), Rylan Kreps (19 assists, 15 goals), Elliot Walters (eight assists, five goals), Branson Quesenberry (nine assists, five goals), Dennin Jenkins (six assists, three goals) and Reece Waddle (seven goals, five assists) are the leaders for AHS. Freshman Daniel Blackmon scored the golden goal in the win over Gate City. … Seventh-seeded William Byrd posted a 4-1 victory over Bassett in an opening-round match on Wednesday. Junior Sergio Leon is among the leaders for the Terriers.
Up Next: The winner plays Northside, a 5-3 quarterfinal winner over Tunstall, in Tuesday’s regional semifinals.
