Joseph Sosa scored in the first half Thursday night, so did Oscar Arriaga, and that was enough to net the Pioneer Valley boys soccer team a 2-0 non-league win over Lompoc at Huyck Stadium in Lompoc.
The Panthers improved to 6-2-1. The Braves are 1-4-1.
Pioneer Valley has mainly rolled with a strong defense this season. The Panthers’ scoring has been decent. They’ve racked up 28 goals. Their defense has yielded 11 goals, an average of just over one a game.
Regular goalkeeper Eric Martinez, a senior, has given the Panthers some good work in the goal area this year. Senior Martin Martinez, a team captain, helps lead a Panthers defense that has been stingy thus far.
The Braves have a solid defense. Lompoc has yielded 17 goals so far this season. The Braves have scored just six.
Both teams are off until 2025. Pioneer Valley will host Cabrillo Jan. 3 at 1 p.m. Lompoc will play at Righetti Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. Both games are non-league ones.
Santa Ynez 6, Mission Prep 0
Pirates goalkeeper Diego Medina notched his first shutout of the season and the Pirates moved to 2-8-1 with a non-league win over the Royals at Mission Prep.
Cristian Sandoval was named Santa Ynez’s Man of the Match. Sandoval scored a goal and had two assists.
Marcos Rivera and Jackson Elliott both scored twice for the Pirates. Evan Eliason tallied once. Rivera, Hayden Kobayashi and Desmond Van Hirtium all had an assist.
The Pirates are off until they host Templeton in their league opener Jan. 7 at 6 p.m.
Boys basketball
Santa Maria 82, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy 40
Johnathan Lupercio dropped in 33 points, and the Saints moved to 10-2 with a rout of the Grizzlies in a non-league game at San Luis Obispo Classical Academy.
Jordan Medina scored 19 points for Santa Maria, and Julius Medina put in 13. The Saints will host the Santa Maria High School Holiday Hoop Tourney that will run Dec. 26-28.
Girls basketball
Lompoc 42, Santa Maria 26
The Braves moved to 8-5 with a strong defensive showing that resulted in a non-league win on Bryan Ayer Court at Lompoc’s Paisola Pavilion.
Tiana Terrones led Lompoc with 11 points. Bella Barbosa scored eight. Aaliyah Juarez led Santa Maria (7-5) with 10 points.
Lompoc will play Bakersfield Stockdale at the Arvin Classic Dec. 26 at 1:30 p.m. Santa Maria will play an out of town tournament game against King City Dec. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
