PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – The ranks of Mississippi High School Activities Association football teams have been thinned as the stakes have been raised.
The Pine Belt area boasts five teams left alive in the MHSAA playoffs.
Friday, those teams will be competing for a South State championship.
The winners of the South State games will play the North State winners during the first week of December for a state crown.
Local teams will be represented in four of the MHSAA’s seven classifications, which range from Class 7A to Class 1A.
No Pine Belt teams are left in the Class 7A, Class 5A or Class 1A competitions.
All kickoffs are set for 7 p.m. Friday.

The Class 3A state title game is set for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5.
Saturday, Dec. 7, will feature three championship games, with the Class 2A title game set for noon, the Class 4A game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the Class 6A final at 7 p.m.
All state championship games are scheduled to be played at the University of Southern Mississippi’s M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg.
