Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia will go by a new name while the city hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
In fact, each of the stadiums involved in the tournament will get named after their host cities throughout this period.
As such, Axios Philadelphia reports how the stadium will be referred to as Philadelphia Stadium during this time. The official FIFA website is already calling it this.
“Philadelphia Stadium opened with a blockbuster friendly match between Manchester United against Barcelona in August 2003, with Ronaldinho setting up Patrick Kluivert to score the arena‘s first goal,” explains the website of the stadium’s soccer history.
“It would go on to house U.S. national team games, the 2015 Gold Cup Final and Manchester United again in the years since, as well as becoming the permanent residents of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles and the temporary home of MLS team Philadelphia Union during the 2010 season.”
Lincoln Financial Field — sorry, Philadelphia Stadium — will host the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup tournament starting in June.
Then in 2026, the City of Brotherly Love will play host to five group stage matches as well as one Round of 16 match. Other stadiums located throughout the country as well as Canada and Mexico will do the same.
“Philadelphia is proud to be a Host City for FIFA World Cup 26,” reads the official event website.
“This once-in-a-generation opportunity will welcome The Beautiful Game to the City of Brotherly Love, delivering the authentic, passionate Philly experiences to fans around the world.”
