EUGENE, Ore. — With the spring game slated for the end of the week, the Ducks were back at it on Tuesday morning. Beneath clear skies the team participated in a fully-padded practice for what acted as their penultimate before Saturday’s spring game.
The session featured very little new or unexpected absences. Wide receiver Jack Ressler missed the session, while cornerback Dakoda Fields made a return after not being spotted last Thursday.
Other than that, attendance was as expected. Offensive lineman Dave Iuli and cornerback Jahlil Florence each remain out with injury. Florence has not participated all spring, while Iuli has missed two straight weeks.
Defensive back Daylen Austin remains away from the team as the legal process plays out following his hit-and-run arrest. Linebacker Bryce Boetthcer and cornerback Rodrick Pleasant are each out with other sport commitments.
Gage Hurych turned in one of the best punts of spring. The freshman’s effort carried a 4.84 second hang time, while Ross James’ best was 4.45. Tez Johnson, Gary Bryant Jr., Dillon Gresham, Jeremiah McClellan, and Evan Stewart returned the punts.
For the second straight week, a kicker was wide on his pressure kick. As the special teams period crept toward the end, Dan Lanning called for a game-winning field goal, different from the customary “fire drill” kick. After lining up, Sappington’s attempt from 40 or so yards away sailed left of the goalpost.
Following special teams the team’s offensive and defensive linemen spent the subsequent period squaring off in 1-on-1s, while the other field featured a sideline tackling drill.
The highlight of that period belonged to transfer Jamaree Caldwell. The sturdy defensive lineman needed just one arm to lift and flip Gernorris Wilson into the air and onto the ground for a vicious victory. Ajani Cornelius and Aydin Breland battled to a stalemate during another competitive rep.
Kenyon Sadiq performed well against Elijah Rushing in a pass protection situation as Matayo Uiagalelei displayed his strength in a winning rep against Travis Brashear.
