LEXINGTON — Even without All-Ohioan Hattie Yugovich, Ontario is a handful.
Addi Pittman scored two goals and assisted on another as the fourth-seeded Warriors cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 2 Norwalk in the lid-lifter of a Division III district semifinal doubleheader Wednesday at Lexington.
Yugovich suffered a serious knee injury in the regular season finale against Shelby. In her absence, Pittman has taken on an even bigger scoring load. Her two goals Wednesday were her 26th and 27th of the season.
“I hate that we don’t have her on the field. We’re sad that we don’t have her out there with us,” Pittman said of her talented junior classmate. “It’s definitely a bit of a change, but I’ve got to step up.”
Pittman gave the Warriors (12-6-1) a 1-0 lead in the second minute when she sent a no-doubter past Norwalk keeper Lilly Farmer. She scored her second goal with 21:37 to play in the first half for a 2-0 Ontario lead, then found thew head of Elaina Seif on a corner kick just 23 seconds before halftime for a 3-0 advantage. Nissi Powers scored a long-range goal early in the second half for a 4-0 lead.
“Everybody contributed. It’s been a long year because of the injuries,” Ontario coach Larry Atkinson said. “It really hurts us not having Hattie out there.”
While Pittman and the offense were rolling, Ontario’s defense did a number on Norwalk’s Claire Spettle. The sophomore came in with 34 goals and 16 assists, but couldn’t shake Ontario defender Jakiah Trammel on Wednesday.
“Jakiah did an outstanding job,” Atkinson said. “She played lights-out in the second half.”
The Warriors advanced to the district final for the 16th straight year and will play Lady Lex for the crown at noon Saturday in Lexington. Lady Lex beat Ashland 3-1 in Wednesday’s nightcap.
What’s it going to take for the Warriors to get over the hump?
“I think it’s just who wants it more,” Pittman said. “Our attitude plays a big part.”
