Ohio State’s first drive ended with the Buckeyes punting, but the next six times OSU had the ball against Purdue it scored (five touchdowns, one field goal). The Ohio State defense pitched its first shutout since a Week 2 win over Western Michigan and first shutout in a Big Ten game since 2017.
The end result was a 45-0 win over the Purdue Boilermakers, which dropped to 1-8 on the season while Ohio State improved to 8-1.
Ohio State quarterback Will Howard completed 21 of 26 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score in just over three quarters of play.
J.T. Tuimoloau paced the defense. He had four tackles, 1 ½ tackles for loss, a pass breakup, and forced a fumble that teammate Jack Sawyer scooped up and scored.
Here’s how Saturday’s game played out.
With OSU cruising toward victory and an 8-1 record, now is a good time to look ahead: The Buckeyes play Northwestern at noon next Saturday with that game being played at Wrigley Field.
Freshman quarterback Julian Sayin replaced Brown and was 0-for-4 passing, but he ran once for 19 yards.
The backups are on for OSU. Quarterback Will Howard finishes 21 of 26 for 260 yards and three touchdowns. He also has a rushing score today.
Brown attempted one pass, and it was incomplete. He ran twice for 3 yards.
9:50 remaining in fourth quarter: Purdue’s Spencer Porath is 0 for 2 on field goal attempts with his latest misfire a 38-yarder.
14:05 remaining in fourth quarter: It had been an unusually quiet afternoon for OSU receiver Emeka Egbuka, but he turned his first reception of the day into his eighth touchdown of the season and 22nd of his career. It was an 10-yard score, preceded by another big TreVeyon Henderson play. Henderson now has a run of 29 yards and a catch of 32 yards.
A short time thereafter, Ohio State appeared to show a sleeping fan on their video board. OSU announced today’s attendance as 103,463.
2:59 remaining in third quarter: On Purdue’s first scrimmage play following TreVeyon Henderson’s TD for the Buckeyes, Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuinoloau hit Purdue running back and forced a fumble that fellow defensive end Jack Sawyer picked up and rushed back 11 yards for a score.
3:07 remaining in third quarter: TreVeyon Henderson followed up a 29-yard run with a 19-yard carry off a fly sweep that extended Ohio State’s lead.
3:22 remaining in third quarter: With roughly four minutes to go in the third quarter, Ohio State had recorded just 67 rushing yards against the 122nd-ranked run defense in the country. But TreVeyon Henderson has just added 29 yards to that. It is the longest play of the day for OSU, either running or passing.
5:43 remaining in the third quarter: Ohio State missed its chance to stop Purdue on a fourth-down play when Davison Igbinosun was called for pass interference, but Lathan Ransom followed that up by grabbing his fourth career interception, his first of the year. The end zone pick that he ran back to the 24 adds to a day when he also has four tackles.
18:34 remaining in third quarter: After a 13-play, 59-yard drive that chewed up 06:21 and heavily featured wide receiver Carnell Tate, Ohio State kicker Jayden Fielding increased the OSU lead with a 42-yard field goal.
It was running back TreVeyon Henderson who returned the opening kickoff of the second half, and left guard Carson Hinzman has returned from his injury.
Buckeyes AD Ross Bjork, during his weekly halftime radio appearance with 97.1 FM/The Ohio State Sports Network, told the broadcast that there is a comprehensive review of all the school’s athletic venues, including the Shoe, currently underway. He said it includes so-called “secret shoppers,” and the program is considering a number of options to improve the atmosphere at games.
The Ohio State marching band, doing a tribute to zoo animals, featured a Tiger that “pooped” out a Michigan logo.
0:27 remaining in second half: Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith made his ninth touchdown catch of the year, and his reception not only put the Buckeyes up 21-0, it also gave him more TD catches than any true freshman in Ohio State history.
Left guard Carson Hinzman was undercut when center Seth McLaughlin rolled into him. Athletic trainers examined Hinzman’s knee before he walked off with a slight limp. Austin Siererveld took over with Hinzman out.
1:40 remaining in second quarter: Ohio State will take over on downs after the Buckeyes’ third sack of Purdue quarterback Hudson Card.
Card is … not having a fun afternoon. The Boilermarkers’ most recent series also included Lathan Ransom making this hit.
8:30 remaining in second quarter: Ohio State needed to convert on a fourth-and-1 to keep their drive alive, but Will Howard rushed for the necessary yard. A few plays later he completed a short pass to Gee Scott who traveled 15 yards for his fourth career touchdown.
Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has three receptions today, and that gives him 42 for the season. So Smith has surpassed Cris Carter as the most prolific true freshman pass catcher in school history.
Wondering why Ohio State started on the 20 as opposed to taking over at the 3-yard line following the missed field goal?
Thank college football rule 8 section 4, article 2.1 regarding unsuccessful field goal tries.
“If the ball untouched by Team B after crossing the neutral zone is declared dead, it belongs to Team B. Except in an extra period Team B will snap the ball at the previous spot unless the previous spot was between its 20-yard line and goal line. In that case Team B will next snap the ball at its 20-yard line.”
0:12 remaining in the first quarter: Purdue marched down the field but stalled in the red zone. The Boilermakers then attempted a 21-yard field goal, which went wide right.
Purdue has scored a mere 3 points combined in the first quarters of games against FBS opponents this season.
Ohio State’s Mitchell Melton entered the Buckeyes’ medical tent after the play.
6:02 remaining in the first quarter: Facing a fourth-and-1, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard ran for a touchdown. It should be noted that running back Quinshon Judkins did a yeoman’s work blocking on that play.
8:01 remaining in the first quarter: Jeremiah Smith made an athletic catch on OSU’s opening drive, meaning he’s now just two catches shy of the Buckeyes’ record for a true freshman, but ultimately Ohio State was forced to punt. Purdue didn’t make much of their turn with the ball either, but on its punt, Caden Curry blocked the attempt and gave OSU the ball at their 8-yard line.
12:17 remaining in the first quarter: Purdue got 14 yards on its first play from scrimmage, a Devin Mockobee run, but after that, OSU buckled down and forced the Boilermakers to punt.
Cody Simon and J.T. Tuimoloau combined for a sack on that series.

Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State 42, Purdue 7
The Boilermakers’ only real hope is for the Buckeyes to have a post-Penn State letdown. Most of West Lafayette has already turned its attention to basketball, and coach Ryan Walters appears on shaky ground in only his second year. The Boilermakers have lost overtime games to Illinois and Northwestern. A dozen years ago, an underdog Purdue team lost in overtime to OSU in the Buckeyes’ closest call in that undefeated season. This one is not going to overtime.
Joey Kaufman, The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State 42, Purdue 10
There is a chance the Buckeyes are sluggish in the aftermath of their emotional win at Penn State last week. But Purdue, which has not defeated a team from the Football Bowl Subdivision this year, is as woeful as any team from a Power Four conference and poses little threat even if Ohio State is going through the motions with a sleepy noon start. These are not the Spoilermakers of yesteryear.
Rob Oller, The Columbus Dispatch: Ohio State 48, Purdue 3
Saying Purdue is not as bad as its 1-7 record − e.g. the Boilermakers did force overtime twice … before losing − is like saying 50-below zero is better than minus-45. It may be true, but either way, the pain is no fun. All of which is to say the Buckeyes can name their score. Expect OSU to wrap things up by halftime then rest the starters for the November stretch run. And don’t be surprised if the offense rushes for more than 200 yards. Purdue ranks 121st in FBS with 203.2 rushing yards allowed per game.
Nathan Baird, Indianapolis Star: Ohio State 52, Purdue 10
Purdue must play a near-perfect game to compete in this one, and it rarely plays near-perfect drives. No Rondale Moores or Ryan Kerrigans to fear here.
