SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – A beloved tradition at Notre Dame continued with the unveiling of “The Shirt 2024″ on Friday evening.
The design was unveiled during a big ceremony on Notre Dame’s campus. It comes one day before the annual Blue-Gold Game at Notre Dame Stadium.
The front of the shirt says “Notre Dame Football: Irish 2024″ and features the fabled Four Horsemen backfield of Jim Crowley, Elmer Layden, Don Miller, and Harry Stuhldreher. They were immortalized with the nickname 100 years ago by Grantland Rice in the New York Herald Tribune after the Fighting Irish upset a strong Army team.
Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. They formed the crest of the South Bend cyclone before which another fighting Army football team was swept over the precipice at the Polo Grounds yesterday afternoon as 55,000 spectators peered down on the bewildering panorama spread on the green plain below.
The back of the shirt says “The Tradition Continues” and features a large golden helmet. Inside the helmet, several of Notre Dame’s national championship banners are visible. Behind the helmet sits an outline of Notre Dame Stadium.
Since 1990, “The Shirt” has unified the student body, alumni, and fans each football season. During its 35 years, more than 3 million shirts have been sold, making it the single highest-selling piece of college athletic apparel in the nation.
All proceeds from sales go directly to The Shirt Charity Fund and the Student Experience Fund.
“It’s expanded over the years, and still to this day all the proceeds go back to support Notre Dame students. We’ve really tried to keep that our mission,” says Ryan Bland, president of The Shirt Project. “It’s grown so massively. It started just among students, and we sold about 1,000 to 2,000 the first couple years. But now, we sell as many as 150,000 units per year.”
