Before the season, few, if any, had the Notre Dame vs. Army football game circled as one that would impact the College Football Playoff race. The nostalgia of these two teams playing at Yankee Stadium 100 years after the fabled “Four Horsemen” of Fighting Irish lore was cool, but it was expected to be an easy Notre Dame win.
Not so much now.
In fact, it’s a top-20 showdown and a proverbial “loser leaves town” matchup for the CFP race when No. 6 Notre Dame (9-1) and No. 19 Army (9-0) tangle in The Bronx (7 p.m., NBC and Peacock).
Pod of Gold:Preview Notre Dame football vs. Army in New York City
It’s the second time this season the Irish are facing an undefeated service academy team in the New York/New Jersey area. Notre Dame dismantled Navy, 51-14, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Oct. 26.
Today marks the 52nd meeting between Notre Dame and Army. It will be the tenth matchup in the series in which both teams are ranked, and the first such occurence since 1958, when No. 3 Army bested No. 4 Notre Dame, 14-2.
Saturday also marks the 12th installment of the Shamrock Series, during whichNotre Dame hosts a game at a neutral site. While the game is counted as a neutral site game in statistics, Notre Dame serves as the home team. The Irish are 12-0 in Shamrock Series games.

Notre Dame football vs. Army: Predictions, keys to top 20 matchup at Yankee Stadium
TV:  NBC
Streaming:  Fubo, Peacock
Ian Eagle, Todd Blackledge and Kathryn Tappen have the call on NBC.
Radio: WSBT (96.1 FM, 960 AM), WNSN (101.5 FM)
Tony Simeone and Ryan Harris have the call on the Notre Dame Football Network.
Odds: Notre Dame if favored by 14.5 points.
Over/under: 44.5 points
MIKE BERARDINO: Notre Dame 45, Army 10. No late-inning drama at Yankee Stadium in this one.
TOM NOIE: Notre Dame 34, Army 13. Notre Dame has come too far and is too close to a possible College Football Playoff berth to play the part in a baseball stadium of a closer who coughs up a lead with late control issues.
AUSTIN HOUGH: Notre Dame 24, Army 17. I think this one will be closer than my colleagues see it. The Irish make a big stop late to hold on to setup a “win and in” game for the playoffs next week at USC.
