ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – The Northwestern State football team is settling into spring practice with their first-year Demons’ head coach Blaine McCorkle.
The Demons’ had a little bit of live action in an abbreviated spring scrimmage.
Even though the live reps were limited, McCorkle and his staff were able to do team periods and focus on special teams.
The energy that oozed out of Turpin Stadium today was unmatched and Coach McCorkle was pleased with the progress.
“There is a lot of great future for this place,” said McCorkle. “It is neat to see the community who is so hungry for this place, and it is neat to see the community so hungry for this to happen. The players who decided to stay and make this happen get it, and they see the big picture. They have decided that this isn’t just about me, it is about something bigger and representing this place well.”
The Demons are eight practices in to the spring, and the offense and defense are completely different.
“I feel like more guys are excited this year to come out and play than they were last year,” said Demons’ cornerback Anthony Richard. “I feel as though they have more reason and more purpose, so that makes us want to come out here and play even harder.”
One difference in the offense is they will be running the ball a lot, and Demons’ senior Chance Newman is back in the quarterback room after being moved to tight end last year.
“I think the team has been doing very well, we have been adapting just like Anthony said there is new energy around here,” said Newman. “People are excited to come out here and play ball. They are excited to come out here and practice is something that has been very exciting for us a team.”
There is not a solidified starting quarterback just yet, as McCorkle is still installing the offense, but it seems as though everyone is embracing the change and trusting him in the process.
“We are getting a lot of things done trying to establish a new culture, new identity and really rebrand the image of what Northwestern State football is,” said McCorkle. “I want to let people know that this is something the community to be proud and get behind. The guys are working hard, they are are buying in. I am not going to say that it has been easy on them. We have had our bumps in the road as we go, but the guys as a whole are buying in. They have good energy, and I am pleased with where we are.”
Northwestern State will have one more scrimmage on Sat. March and the spring game is on April 20th.
