COLLEGE FOOTBALL
The Norfolk State football team’s MEAC opener this season will be played in an NFL stadium. The Spartans’ Sept. 28 game against North Carolina Central has been selected as the Circle City Classic and will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis instead of Dick Price Stadium.
The Circle City Classic is an annual HBCU showcase, with numerous other events taking place around the game.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Former Norfolk State forward Jack Doumbia has signed with Wright State out of the transfer portal, the Raiders announced.
The 6-6 Lanham, Maryland, native averaged 5.1 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.9 minutes a game for the Spartans last season.
Trinidad State Junior College (Colorado) forward Finn Lally has committed to William & Mary, he announced on social media.
The 6-9 New Zealand native averaged 9.0 points and 5.3 rebounds last season. He played two years for Trinidad State.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Anthony Stephan went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and hit one of Virginia’s six home runs in the Cavaliers’ 18-5 home victory over George Washington on Wednesday.
Former Cox High star Ethan Anderson and Bobby Whalen also homered and drove in three runs for UVA (36-12), which has won five straight.
Old Dominion 14, VCU 8 (late Tuesday): Luke Waters had five hits and three RBIs and five teammates finished with at least two hits each as Old Dominion beat VCU at The Diamond in Richmond.
The Monarchs (26-22) finished with 15 hits. ODU’s Kyle Edwards homered, singled, walked twice and finished with three RBIs.
N.C. State 18, Norfolk State 0: The Wolfpack scored nine runs in the seventh inning en route to a seven-inning victory in Raleigh.
N.C. State (27-18) finished with 15 hits, and four pitchers limited NSU (11-36) to three hits.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF
Virginia finished in third place in the NCAA Cle Elum Regional on Wednesday in Washington to reach the NCAA Championships.
The top five teams in each regional advance to the national championships.
The Cavaliers’ Amanda Sambach finished tied for third individually at 2 under par, while teammate Celeste Valinho tied for ninth at 3 over.
James Madison’s Kendall Turner (Great Bridge) tied for 24th individually at the Bermuda Run Regional at 2-over 218..
COLLEGE TENNIS
William & Mary men’s tennis player Oliver Hague has been selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year.
Hague, who led the Tribe with a 24-9 singles record, and doubles partner Satchel Benn also made the All-CAA second team.
W&M’s Alexandre Leblanc made the All-CAA second team in singles and the doubles team of Bill Duo and Konstantinos Raptis made the third team.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Christopher Newport’s Jamie Martin has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Year, while teammate Candace Slaw was Rookie of the Year.
CNU pitcher Kate Alger and outfielder Katie Currin joined Martin and Slaw on the all-conference first team. Four Captains players made honorable mention: second baseman Caroline Pollock, outfielder Jules Donnelly, middle infielder Delaney Nuckols and third baseman Brooke Greaver.
Martin is 10-1 with a 0.85 ERA. Slaw, an outfielder, is hitting .491 with 35 stolen bases and a team-high 37 runs.
