After months of rigorous preparation, Nigeria’s Women’s U-19 cricket team, the Junior Female Yellow Greens, will face Pakistan today in a warm-up game ahead of their maiden appearance at the Malaysia 2025 ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup.

The warm-up match, scheduled for 3:30 pm local time (10:30 pm Nigerian time), will take place at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi, Malaysia.
This encounter with Pakistan, ranked eighth on the ICC T20 standings, is expected to be a stern test for the Nigerian team, currently ranked 26th.
Historic Qualification
Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament is a remarkable feat, as they emerged winners of the African Qualifying Series held in Kigali, Rwanda, in October 2024.
The team edged out higher-ranked opponents, including Zimbabwe and Uganda, to earn the sole African spot in the global competition.
The team’s captain, Lucky Piety, will lead the Junior Female Yellow Greens into their historic debut, with their first World Cup match slated against Samoa on Saturday, January 18, at the Borneo Cricket Ground in Sarawak.
Uyi Akpata, President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), described the team’s participation as a significant moment for cricket in Nigeria.
“The girls have been at different camp sessions since they qualified in October, and they concluded one last weekend in India before heading finally to Malaysia.”
“I believe these exposures will come together to enhance their performance,” he said.
Akpata also commended the National Sports Commission for its unwavering support.
“We commend the leadership of the National Sports Commission for their support and encouragement in ensuring the team’s World Cup plan is fully seen through.”
The Junior Female Yellow Greens have been drawn in Group C alongside Samoa, New Zealand, and South Africa. Their fixtures are as follows:
January 18, 2025: Nigeria vs. Samoa at Borneo Cricket Ground, Sarawak.
January 20, 2025: Nigeria vs. New Zealand.
January 22, 2025: Nigeria vs. South Africa.
This marks Nigeria’s second appearance at a cricket World Cup after the men’s U-19 team’s participation in the 2019 edition in South Africa.
Captain Lucky Piety has spoken on the importance of this World Cup for Nigeria’s cricket development in an earlier interview:
“This World Cup is a chance to put Nigeria on the global map in cricket. We’re ready to give our all and show what we can do on this stage.”
With the warm-up game against Pakistan serving as an essential test of their readiness, the Junior Female Yellow Greens aim to make their mark on the world stage and inspire a new era for Nigerian cricket.
