Nigeria cricket made history on Friday by winning all 13 categories at the prestigious 2024 Middle Stump End-of-Year Awards for African cricket.
The event, held at the Cricket Lab of the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval in Lagos, celebrated an exceptional year for Nigerian cricket on the continental stage.
The awards honored the country’s standout achievements, including a historic bronze medal at the African Games in Ghana and qualification for the 2025 ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup in Malaysia.
Coach of the Year: Leke Oyede, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s national cricket team, secured the award after leading the Female Yellow Greens to their African Games bronze medal.
He triumphed over Uganda’s Jackson Owang, Malawi’s Cathy McComb, and Nigeria’s U-19 coach, Sarah Bhakitha.
Best Cricketing Moment: The Junior Female Yellow Greens’ qualification for the 2025 ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup was celebrated as the Best Cricketing Moment in Africa, beating stiff competition from Uganda’s T20 World Cup qualification and Nigeria’s senior team’s African Games bronze medal.
Grassroots Excellence: Edo State Cricket Association won the Best Grassroots Development Program, edging out notable initiatives like Soroti Cricket Academy (Uganda) and Cricket Builds Hope (Rwanda). Okechukwu Onwudiwe of the Northern Cosmopolitan Academy was recognized for his Individual Contribution to Grassroots Development.
Women’s Player of the Year: Piety Lucky, captain of the Malaysia-bound U-19 team.
Men’s Player of the Year: Isaac Danladi, standout batsman for the Yellow Greens.
Young Players of the Year: Peculiar Agboya (women) and Ridwan Abdulkareem (men).
Umpires of the Year: Tope Onikoyi and Dahiru Enesi won the male and female categories, respectively.
Administrator of the Year: Ene Odang.
Former Nigeria Cricket Federation president Kwesi Sagoe received the Lifetime Service Award, while Funmilayo Omoniyi was voted Fan’s Fan of the Year, for her passionate support for cricket in Nigeria.
