NFF president Ibrahim Gusau has expressed confidence the Super Eagles are capable of winning their remaining six 2026 World Cup qualifiers so as to book their ticket to the global finals.
The Super Eagles are in serious danger of not qualifying for the next World Cup after they have failed to win any of their four qualifiers thus far.
They languish second from bottom with three points, four points adrift of front runners Rwanda, South Africa and Benin.
They are therefore under pressure not to drop any more points if they wish to feature at the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.
NFF president Gusau said this is possible if the Super Eagles could re-enact the form they showed by reaching the 2023 AFCON final earlier this year.
“Our commitment is to see how we can cobble back that Super Eagles squad that did the nation proud at the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, coming within 23 minutes of lifting the trophy,” he said.
If we can find a way to do that, we can be sure that the target of winning the remaining six matches in the qualifiers to gail automatic qualification to the World Cup is achievable.”
He further said that World Cup qualification will then set the tone for Nigeria to shine at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
“Getting that FIFA World Cup ticket will set the momentum for a sterling outing at the AFCON in Morocco later in the Year (2025).”
