New head Cornell football coach hosts prospect skills camps – WBNG

ITHACA, NY (WBNG) — Cornell football moved on last December from long-tenured head coach David Archer. Big Red brought in University of Pennsylvania Offensive Coordinator Dan Swanstrom to be the team’s next head coach. Swanstrom, who has previous head coaching experience with the Ithaca College Bombers already is taking the bull by the horns. Swanstrom is Installing a series of summer high school football camps.
“Our idea behind this is to get the players who signed up for this, and the high school players, to really make it feel like they’re a part of Cornell football. So, the instruction comes from us and the coaches, and we want to make it worth their while. They take something away from this, and they get a lot better at their craft, and prepare them for their seasons upcoming,” said the new Cornell Head Coach.
Cornell football has not finished a season over .500 since 2005. Coach Swanstrom is planning on turning this football program around by hosting summer prospect and specialist camps. Swanstrom cannot work with his team during the summer under Ivy League Rules. Camps like this allow his players to continue interacting with the coaching staff. They also provide an opportunity for the players to teach aspiring college football athletes what they already know.
“This process is going to be a long build. It’s going to be slow, it’s going to be painful, it’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be for everybody, and it still might not work. But, we’re going to try pretty hard to get it done,” said Swanstrom.
Although Swanstrom’s top priority with these camps is to provide top-level instruction to the recruits; he hopes that connections can be formed between the coaches and the prospects. The goal, when it comes down to deciding on a school in the future they will keep Cornell top of mind.
The coaches work hard. They coach them hard. They get them better. They build a connection, and when it comes their time to make a selection on a school, they keep Cornell in the mix because of the experience they have had with this coaching staff,” said Coach.
The Swanstrom era on the field begins with Cornell’s opening game road trip to Colgate on September 21st.
