Denzel Dumfries was “dreadful” in Inter Milan’s Serie A loss to Sassuolo.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper also credit Tajon Buchanan and Juan Cuadrado for bright substitute appearances.
Dumfries got the start for Inter in yesterday’s match at the Mapei Stadium.
The Dutchman was back from suspension, having served a one-match ban in Inter’s previous Serie A match against Torino.
It was not exactly the greatest of returns to the team for Dumfries, however.
In attack, there were a couple of decent-looking crosses from the former PSV wingback.
However, other than that, Dumfries looked out of sorts. Among other things, the 28-year-old dragged his shot wide from what was perhaps Inter’s best chance to equalize in the entire match.
And in defense, Dumfries was the player largely responsible for Inter’s major blunde.
It was the Dutchman who was defending Sassuolo wingback Josh Doig one on one. And the Neroverdi player showed simply greater determination to get the ball past him.
That lack of a real challenge by Dumfries was fatal for Inter in the end.
If Dumfries was Inter’s standout performer for the wrong reasons, two other wingbacks did do much better.
Former Juventus and Chelsea veteran Juan Cuadrado was the player to replace the Dutchman.
And it was a striking performance from the Colombian.
Cuadrado’s dribbling and trickery with the ball made him a real outlet in attack for Inter in a way that Dumfries hadn’t been.
And then it was a similar story for Canadian international Buchanan.
Buchanan came on to play on Inter’s left flank.
And for a long portion of his time on the pitch, a lot of Inter’s play went through Buchanan.
The 25-year-old’s pace and technical ability made life exceptionally difficult for the Sassuolo defense at times.
