Denzel Dumfries has faced some criticism for his performance in Inter Milan’s Serie A win over Udinese yesterday evening.
Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, note the Dutchman’s culpability in Udinese’s opener, as well as a lack of precision going forward.
Dumfries got his first Serie A start in over a month yesterday evening.
The Dutchman got the nod ahead of Matteo Darmian on the right flank of the Inter 3-5-2 system.
And Dumfries did show how proactive he could be in that wingback role. The 27-year-old former PSV wingback pushed forward at every opportunity, winning the ball back a couple times and making himself an outlet.
Dumfries linked up with striker Marcus Thuram in particular. The pair would interchange positions to try and create passing combinations.
But the problem was a lack of precision or a final ball from Dumfries.
The Inter wingback would get into dangerous areas, but tend to delay the final pass and give Udinese defenders time to recover and get in the way of whatever he had intended.
If this relative lack of impact going forward was a problem for Dumfries, even worse was one critical moment at the other end.
Dumfries was certainly culpable on Udinese’s opening goal.
There looked to be little danger to Friulani midfielder Lazar Samardzic’s long-range effort from the corner of the penalty area.
Even with a deflection, the shot did not have much pace on it. It looked to be a comfortable catch for keeper Yann Sommer, or a clearance for Dumfries.
But the Inter wingback seemed to indicate to his keeper that he was going to take care of the ball.
Then, however, Dumfries inexplicably pulled out.
This left Sommer confused, not able to react in time, and saw the ball dribble over the goalline.
