NFL Draft is coming up!
The NCAA spring transfer portal cycle for the 2024 college football season has officially opened. The portal has fully cranked into gear with the FBS spring transfer window beginning April 16 and ending April 30, 2024. Though some players announced their intentions to transfer prior to Tuesday, they could not officially enter the portal until it opened.
Given that thousands of FBS players enter the portal each cycle and NIL has become a differentiating factor in player acquisition, expect to see plenty of movement this offseason in what has become one of the most important periods on the college football calendar.
In addition to the notable transfer players that will be listed below as the process continues over the next month, keep it locked here as CBS Sports and 247Sports cover the transfer portal window from top to bottom with a live tracker, updated rankings and much more. NCAA transfer portal via 247Sports: Latest portal additions | Team transfer rankings
TCU defensive tackle Damonic Williams will enter the transfer portal after two years with the Frogs, according to 247Sports. A 2023 All-Big 12 selection, Williams quickly becomes one of the top linemen available. He emerged as a playmaker as a 17-year-old true freshman on TCU’s national finalist roster. In two seasons, he posted 60 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Defensive tackle has been perhaps the single most sought-after position in the transfer portal, but few quality players have become available. Ohio’s Rayyan Buell is the only four-star defensive line prospect in the portal, and Williams weighs 40 more pounds. Several of the most competitive programs in America covet defensive tackle transfers, including Texas, Georgia and Oregon. A bidding war could quickly break out for his services.
Williams is a native of Southern California and was offered by USC, Michigan and Penn State. However, his primary recruiters to TCU were Chidera Uzo-Diribe and Ra’Shaad Samples; those coaches are now at Georgia and Oregon respectively.
Houston wide receiver Samuel Brown Jr. rates as the new top pass-catcher available and one of the best players available in the transfer portal after earning a .9200 rating from 247Sports. He ranks as the No. 5 overall uncommitted player and No. 10 wide receiver of the transfer cycle, trailing just behind teammate Matthew Golden who landed at Texas.
Brown started his career at West Virginia but opted to transfer to Houston and join former Mountaineers coach Dana Holgorsen. He quickly became a major contributor for the Coogs, catching 103 passes for 1,286 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons. As a redshirt sophomore in 2023, he led the team with 815 yards receiving during Houston’s first season in the Big 12.
Wide receiver has emerged as a key position of need in the transfer portal and Brown will have no shortage of options. USC, Florida, Texas A&M and Penn State are all programs that have pursued receiver help in the portal. The Georgia native could move to the top of the list.
Colorado tight end Chamon Metayer is back in the transfer portal less than five months after initially committing to Deion Sanders from Cincinnati, 247Sports reports. Metayer was given a four-star portal rating by 247Sports back in December after a breakout sophomore campaign with the Bearcats.
Metayer is the latest Colorado to hit the transfer portal since the spring window opened earlier this week. On Tuesday, former five-star cornerback Cormani McClain entered his name into the pool of available transfers after playing sparingly as a freshman. That news came shortly after starting offensive lineman Savion Washington did the same. The 6-foot-8 standout started 10 games at right tackle for the Buffaloes last season and played well despite some struggles across the line of scrimmage.
Other Colorado players to enter the transfer portal this week include OL Isaiah Jatta, OL David Conner, DL Chazz Wallace, EDGE Devee Harris, DB Myles Slusher, DB Jaden Milliner-Jones, and WR Tar’Varish Dawson.
After earning first-team All-Conference USA honors at Sam Houston during the 2023 season, Da’Marcus Crosby is entering the transfer portal and could be a name to watch. The veteran cornerback has one season left to play after spending the first three years of his career at the junior college level. Crosby picked off four passes for the Bearkats this past season and racked up 55 tackles. At 6-foot-2, he has good size for the position. With a nose for the football and some accolades to his name, he could generate some power conference interest.
