PENSACOLA, Fl. (WALA) – 16 of the very best teams are in Pensacola for the NAIA women’s soccer championship. And it’s a battle all for the red banner.
FOX10 brought you coverage of last year’s final as the Cumberland Patriots defeated the William Carey Crusaders to win the championship.
Both teams are back as the number 1 and number 2 seeds respectively.
“You’re talking about the two best teams in the country. The number one seed and the number two seed. And we’re really proud to showcase the talent that is in the NAIA. Specifically in women’s soccer. And hopefully, everyone will be able to witness that over the next couple of days,” Alex Schultz with the NAIA said.
And the Patriots started the day off against a very competitive John Brown University team.
And speaking of competition, all 16 teams who qualified for last year’s tournament, qualified for this year’s tournament as well.
All for a chance at the red banner.
“The girls are really excited to come down and be in the beach and be in a great area. Most of these girls are from the Midwest and the North so the weather is a nice changeup. But as you can see, it’s an incredible facility. It’s an incredible field. It’s one of the best in the nation, and definitely the best field that they’ll play on all year long. So, it’s definitely the reason why we wanted to be here,” Schultz said.
