Tom Shanklin, who spent the past 11 years as head soccer coach at Fort Payne, has been hired as the head coach of Northeast Alabama Community College’s new men’s soccer program.

Northeast Alabama Community College’s new men’s soccer program now has its head coach.
NACC announced the hiring of Tom Shanklin Tuesday night to fill the role as the program’s first head coach.
NACC is set to begin play in the sport in 2025 and construction will soon begin on an on-campus soccer stadium adjacent to the college’s new softball facility, Ledbetter Stadium.
“We at Northeast are very pleased to hire Tom Shanklin,” NACC President Dr. David Campbell said in a press release. “He is a proven coach who has a great reputation for the way he develops players as people. Under Coach Shanklin’s leadership, our program has limitless potential.”
Shanklin comes to NACC after an 11-year tenure as the head soccer coach at Fort Payne High School. Shanklin’s teams won three state championships and 11 area titles during his tenure, and his career coaching record is 216-73-19. Shanklin has been a soccer coach for more than 20 years, including a stint with the DeKalb County Inferno as the Director of Coaching in 2021 and 2022. A native of Miami, Florida, Shanklin has lived in the Fort Payne area most of his life. He was a member of the first soccer program at Fort Payne High School when the sport became an AHSAA sanctioned sport.
“I feel honored that Northeast has chosen to entrust me to begin what I hope to be a long and successful soccer program at the college,” Shanklin said in a press release. “The environment that surrounds NACC, from the administration to the staff and students, is electric. I am excited to bring the culture I’ve built coaching soccer and apply it to the men’s Mustang soccer program at Northeast.”
Soccer is the latest sports addition to NACC’s growing athletics department. The school started men’s and women’s golf in 2017, followed by Esports and men’s and women’s cross country in 2022 and softball (2023), which makes its official debut next spring after playing a fall exhibition season that recently concluded.
“We are excited about the future of our men’s soccer program,” said NACC Athletic Director Jimmy Kolaitis in a release. “Coach Shanklin is a proven coach in this area and he is very well respected by the community. Not only is Tom a proven winner, but he is also a great leader for young athletes.”
