After a dominating 9-1 win over Winterset on Monday night, DCG boys soccer took on Newton in the substate final for the right to go to the state championship in Des Moines. Leading the way for the Mustangs was senior Ben Jackson who had two goals on nine shots and would be the game’s top scorer.
Brandon Fuller had a couple of assists on the night and the Mustangs goalie, Jaden Mendias was excellent as he was a brick wall not allowing any goals on the night. With only two saves for the DCG keeper the story of the night was their offense. With 5 goals in the first half and two in the second, the Mustangs had their foot on the gas all night long. Their 7-0 victory puts their record at an impressive 14-4.
They’re playing their best soccer when it matters most. The Mustangs will take that momentum to the state tournament where they will play in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, May 29th.
The girl’s squad is in action later tonight in a highly anticipated matchup at home against Council Bluffs Jefferson. They won on the road 2-0 to beat LeMars. The Mustangs have been on a hot streak and it started for them on defense. They haven’t let up a goal in their past seven games and haven’t let up more than one goal since April 20th when they beat Bishop Heelan 3-2.
They’ll be looking for more of the same tonight if they want to join their boys counterpart in the Iowa state tournament quarterfinals.
