About the Wildcats
Northern Michigan is receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll and travels to Houghton with an overall record of 6-2- and a 4-1-1 ledger in league play. The Wildcats are on a two-game win streak following a conference sweep of Ferris State (3-0) Friday and Saginaw Valley State (3-1) on Sunday. On the season, NMU has the most productive offense in the GLIAC, pacing the league in goals (26), assists (23) and shots (185).
Justina L’Esperance averages 1.5 points per game and has netted a team-leading six goals to go with five assists. Hannah Kastamo, Brooke Pietila and Molly Pistorius have each accounted for four goals for NMU. Madison Bilbia and Stephanie Trujillo have chipped in offensively with two goals, respectively.
First-year goalkeeper Sally Patton is off to a great start in net for the Wildcats, making eight starts while stopping 19 shots and only allowing three goals this season. She holds a record of 5-1-2 with five total shutouts. Jillian Thompson has also appeared in goal for NMU, appearing in three games while making four saves.
Head coach Jon Sandoval is back for his fifth season at the helm of the Wildcats who were the favorites to win the league in the preseason poll.
About the Huskies
Michigan Tech looks to turn the corner on a two-game skid after falling to Saginaw Valley State (1-0) on Friday and Ferris State (2-0) on Sunday. The Huskies are now 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the loop.
Despite the lack of offense last weekend, senior forward Julia Pietila is atop the league with six goals, including two game-winners. The Hartland, Michigan, native posts 2.67 shots per game and 1.44 shots on goal to lead the team.
Veteran Kiersen Korienek and sophomore Reilly Lovercheck have also netted game-winners through nine games. Korienek, Taylor Noble and Grace Hoeppner have accounted for two assists this fall campaign.
The Huskies are producing over six corner kicks per game, ranking 35th nationally and first in the league to go with 14.4 shots per game.
Junior Goalkeeper Bri Barrows has played to a 4-4 record, facing 57 shots while making 26 saves. She’s logged 675 minutes between the posts and has three combined shutouts.
