MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo Bulldogs boys and girls soccer teams continued their winning ways with victories over the Shelby County Wildcats, but perhaps just as importantly, they honored their seniors on their special night.
Montevallo’s girls won 4-0 and the boys won 5-0 to sweep the senior night doubleheader on Thursday, April 11 at Montevallo High School.
While the Bulldogs won by multiple goals in the girls game, much of their offense only came after a tighter first half.
Montevallo scored the opener in the first half, but it couldn’t add anything to that before the break as Shelby County remained close in pursuit of its first win or draw of the season.
However, the Bulldogs broke through in the second half and built on their 1-0 halftime lead by pulling away for the win.
Montevallo improved on its first-half offensive output with three goals after the halftime break to take a four-goal lead.
The Bulldogs maintained a clean sheet throughout to seal the 4-0 shutout win.
The boys then got a victory of the own in the second match of the doubleheader.
Montevallo started out the match with a pair of goals in the first half to take the early lead.
Over on defense, the Bulldogs kept the score sheet free of goals for the entire first half, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead at halftime.
That shutout defense continued into the second half as Montevallo finished off the clean sheet to keep its county rival at bay.
The Bulldogs then added three more goals in the final 40 minutes to seal the 5-0 victory on senior night.
Montevallo has just two matches remaining before the end of the regular season, the first being its area finale against Holt. The Bulldogs will travel to Holt High School on Tuesday, April 16 for a girls game at 5:30 p.m. and a boys game at 7 p.m.
While this was the last match of the season for the Shelby County varsity girls team, the boys will wrap up their season with a home match against Childersburg on Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m.
