ABILENE, Texas – The ACU Wildcats fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Southern Utah on Thursday night at Elmer Gray Stadium, extending their record to 2-6-7 (0-3-1 WAC). Despite a slow start, ACU dominated the second half with relentless pressure, and a goal from junior midfielder Amelia Miller sealed the tie.
Southern Utah (2-8-5, 0-3-2 WAC) struck first in the 29th minute finding the back of the net. Despite the early setback, the Wildcats regrouped and began to take control of the game in the second half.
ACU came out strong after halftime, firing off 11 of their 14 total shots in the second period. The Wildcats’ persistence paid off in the 60th minute, as Miller netted her second goal of the season with a powerful strike, leveling the score 1-1. ACU continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the match, but Southern Utah’s defense held firm.
The Wildcats dominated set-piece opportunities with 11 corner kicks compared to Southern Utah’s three but were unable to capitalize on those chances. Defensively, Lili Ross made two saves in goal.
“Their goal came against the run of play and the team knew that," said head coach Stephen Salas. "We were locked in after we conceded and ready to respond to get the game tying goal. Amelia’s goal was a great effort to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net in a crucial time. We were pressing for the game tying goal and got it."
While the Wildcats had the majority of possession and opportunities, including four shots on goal, they could not secure the victory. ACU’s physicality was evident throughout the match, with the team committing 10 fouls compared to Southern Utah’s three.
“It was tough not get the handball for a penalty kick in the last minute but we had other opportunities to find the game winner that we need to capitalize on," Salas said. "We were pleased with our ball movement in response to the last game and we know the team will respond again. We know these next two games are important to make the tournament and I’m excited to watch this us compete on Sunday with a focus."
