Sherrone Moore has a solid foundation for the 2025 season from this year’s transfer portal class, but there are still some holes that need to be filled. Here are Michigan Football’s remaining transfer portal needs this offseason:
Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines have put together a really nice transfer portal class so far this offseason, acquiring players at nearly every position on the field. But there is more work to be done, with a few positions still needing to be addressed before the start of the 2025 season.
Here are the top remaining needs for Michigan in the portal this offseason.
Even though Michigan signed Donaven McCulley from Indiana, wide receiver remains a big need. The wide receiver position for the Wolverines in 2024 was — no exaggeration — the worst I’ve seen in my 30 years of existence, so I would feel a lot more comfortable if they brought in at least one more guy.
The biggest targets as of now are Troy Stellato (Clemson) and Kaedin Robinson (Appalachian State). According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Stellato is planning to schedule a trip to Michigan “as he sorts through some transcript hurdles,” so we’ll see if the Wolverines are ever able to get him on campus. Meanwhile, Robinson was just offered over the weekend, so it remains to be known where exactly the Wolverines sit on his group of suitors, which also includes USC, Florida State, UCLA, Cal, Auburn, West Virginia and more.
You can never have too many quality offensive linemen, especially when your team bases its offensive identity on running the ball and being physical at the point of attack. That’s a huge reason why Michigan beat Ohio State in Columbus and Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
Brady Norton (Cal Poly) and Lawrence Hattar (Ferris State) are nice additions to the room, but it’s unknown if those guys that — let’s face it, played lower tier competition — would be ready for Big Ten football. The offensive line was a bit of a disappointment in 2024 overall, so if Michigan can make an upgrade at any spot, it shouldn’t hesitate to do so.
The only known target as of now is Shiyazh Pete (New Mexico State), but nothing has been reported about Pete since he posted his offer from Michigan on his social media. Perhaps this is a spot the Wolverines hit more in the coming weeks and/or in the spring.
With Will Johnson and Aamir Hall both out the door, cornerback is a need for the 2025 season. Jyaire Hill flashed at times in 2024, but was inconsistent and in the doghouse for a short time at the end of the season. Zeke Berry looked good at corner as well, but it’s unclear if he will stick there or go back to nickel. Other guys like Jo’Ziah Edmond and incoming true freshman Shamari Earls have high potential, but you can’t rely on young guys that have little-to-no experience at cornerback.
As of now, the name to know is Ryland Gandy (Pitt), who visited Michigan and Indiana last week. He is also expected to check out North Carolina. He put up 40 tackles and one pass breakup this past season.
Unfortunately, Michigan’s other top option at corner, Jordan Shaw (Washington), committed to Texas A&M over the weekend.
With Tommy Doman transferring to Florida, Michigan is looking for a new starting punter. Hudson Hollenbeck was fine against Alabama — he looked nervous on his first couple punts, but did boom a 69-yarder and averaged 46.2 yards per punt — but the Wolverines need to bring in some competition for him at the very least.
The only significant name reported on as of now — Ryan Marks of Utah State — comes courtesy of On3’s EJ Holland. Marks booted a 75-yard punt and had 38 total punts back in 2023, but he only punted seven times in 2024. Perhaps this will be more of a position of focus during the spring portal window, which is open from April 16-25.
