Throughout the season, there’s been continued buzz about this potentially being Mack Brown‘s last year at North Carolina. However, it’s now looking like he doesn’t intend on this being his last season.
Brown is telling people at North Carolina, including staff and players along with recruits, that he plans to remain the Tar Heels’ coach beyond this season, sources tell CBS Sports and 247Sports.
The UNC administration has not commented in recent months on Brown’s status past the 2024 season. Brown is under contract through the 2027 season.
The 73-year-old Brown, who is in his sixth season at North Carolina, has the Tar Heels 6-4. The 70-50 home loss in September to James Madison, with postgame locker room comments that gave members of the team the impression that he was leaving the job, kicked off a four-game losing streak and furthered doubts about his future and whether the administration wanted him to remain. Since then, the Tar Heels have won three straight games against Virginia, Florida State and Wake Forest.
North Carolina closes the regular season with games at Boston College and against rival NC State in Chapel Hill. It could end up being the fourth time in the past five seasons that Brown has led the Tar Heels to at least eight wins. North Carolina finished last season 8-5 following a 9-5 finish in 2022.
The UNC recruiting class, which is scheduled to sign in two weeks during National Signing Day, is currently ranked No. 69 in the nation. The Tar Heels are still in play with several remaining targets.
Brown now owns 288 career wins as a head coach, including 158 along with a national championship in 16 seasons as the coach at Texas, and 69 during a previous stint at UNC from 1988 to 1997.
