Luxembourg’s national football team will have to get past either Germany or Italy in their bid to qualify for the next World Cup, after the draw was made in Zurich on Friday.
The Red Lions will face Slovakia and Northern Ireland in Group A of qualifying for the tournament, which will be held in the US, Canada and Mexico between 11 June and 19 July 2026.
The identity of the final opponent – Germany or Italy, who have each won the World Cup four times – will be known after the two countries meet each other in March in the quarter-finals of the Nations League.

The winner of the game in March will join Luxembourg and the other countries in their group.
Fixtures in Luxembourg’s group will begin in September, with the group winners qualifying automatically for the 2026 World Cup, while the runners-up will enter the play-offs.
Luxembourg last met Germany in a friendly game in 2006, losing 7-0 in Freiburg, and Italy in 2014, drawing 1-1.
The Red Lions, who have never qualified for a major tournament but reached the play-off stages for this year’s Euro 2024 competition, have had more recent duels with both Slovakia and Northern Ireland.
Luxembourg played Slovakia twice during 2023 in qualifying matches for this summer’s European Championship, with Slovakia winning 1-0 in the Grand Duchy and the two sides playing out a goalless draw in Bratislava.
Northern Ireland were in Luxembourg’s Nations League group this year, beating the Red Lions 2-0 in Belfast before the teams held each other in a 2-2 draw last month at the Stade de Luxembourg.
