Luis Rubiales, former head of the Spanish Football Federation, will be tried for sexual assault over his unsolicited kissing of Spain’s Jenni Hermoso. The kiss, which occurred after Spain’s triumph at the Women’s World Cup last year, was “unwanted”, according to Hermoso. During the trophy ceremony, Rubiales, who denies any wrongdoing, appeared to have taken hold of Hermoso and kissed her on the lips. The incident led to worldwide backlash, prompting Rubiales to resign and now facing one count of sexual assault, which carries a year prison term. The 46-year-old will also be tried for coercion after being accused of pressuring Hermoso into stating that the kiss was consensual. Former women’s head coach Jorge Vilda, sporting director Albert Luque and head of marketing Ruben Rivera are also being tried for coercion. All four men are facing up to 18 months in prison if convicted, with no date confirmed for the trial that will be held at the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid.
