There will be 48 teams participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup starting on June 11, 2025 when the Group Stage matches kickstart the event. This is a substantial increase to the usual number of teams that are participating in this worldwide sporting event.
For the World Cup events during the years between 1930 to 1950, there were only 13 to 16 participating teams. The 1954 World Cup had 16 teams while there were 24 teams for the World Cup in 1982 and 32 teams for the worldwide event that took place in 1998.
There will be a total of 104 matches throughout the year-long event that will end with the FIFA World Cup 26 final with the winner of the 101st match and the victor of the 102nd match facing off at the New York New Jersey Stadium facing off on July 19, 2026.
