The Argentine star spoke about how he faces the challenge of playing in MLS, a league that helped him rediscover the joy of playing
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was one of the highlights for Lionel Messi, as he led the Argentine national team on the field to win its third world title, so the nagging question is whether we will see the Argentine star at the 2026 World Cup.
Since June 2023, Lionel Messi left European football after leaving PSG to join Inter Miami, where the Argentine became the best player in MLS.
Currently, the Herons are the main favorites to win the 2024 MLS Cup, after Gerardo Martino’s team broke the record for points scored in the regular season with 74 points.
In an interview with 433, Messi said that while he would like to be part of the next World Cup, the Inter Miami striker wants to be in good shape, so he wants to take things easy in MLS.
“I’ve been asked about this many times, especially in Argentina. I hope to finish this year well and have a good pre-season, which I missed last year because of all the travelling. From there, I’ll see how I feel.”
Messi suffered an injury in the Copa America final, which kept him out of action for two months, so the Rosario native wants to take it step by step to reach 2026 without serious injuries.
“I don’t think about it. There’s a long way to go and a lot of things can happen in football. I just live day to day without looking beyond that.”
The Argentine also revealed that while some players choose to become coaches after retiring from the pitch, the former Barcelona and PSG striker does not see himself from the bench of a team.
“I wouldn’t like to be a coach. But I don’t have a clear idea of what I might want to do either. I value much more what I live day by day. I just think about training, playing and having fun.”
