On paper, the Bears dominated Newberry, leading in shots, corner kicks, and time of possession. Unfortunately, the game isn’t played on paper. Newberry scored the game’s lone goal in the 43rd minute, giving them a 1-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday night.
Lenoir-Rhyne were the aggressors early, forcing four three half saves from Newberry’s goalie. The Wolves broke through just before half thanks to a goal from Henok Awoke.
The Bears outshot Newberry 8-1 in the second half, but failed to find the back of the net. Harri Rowe led with five shots, two of them being on goal.
The Bears outshot the Wolves 15-5, with a 4-2 edge in shots-on-goal.
The Bears have a 22-6-1 record all-time against Newberry. This is the first win for the Wolves over the Bears since October 23, 2021.
Jaheim Smith picked up the Bear’s only yellow in the 87th minute.
The Bears are 3-3 overall, 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne will host Chowan in a Wednesday midweek contest. Chowan comes into the game with a 3-3-2 record. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Hickory.
