Terry Roche
Terry Roche
Terry Roche, a well-known Southern California high school championship football coach and first head football coach at Chino Hills High School when it opened in 2001, died early Monday morning at age 72 after an illness.
The longtime Chino Hills resident is survived by his wife, Sue, a former Chino Valley Unified administrator, their two children Becky and Brian, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 14085 Peyton Drive in Chino Hills.
The service is open to the public.
Tributes poured in on social media after the news of Coach Roche’s passing, including from the Chino and Chino Hills football programs, and from St. John Bosco in Bellflower and Diamond Bar, places he worked in more than three decades coaching high school football.
“Terry was a great coach, motivator and friend,” said retired Chino High School football coach John Monger, who coached with and against Coach Roche. “He loved his family. You had to be on your ‘A’ game to beat Terry and sometimes it did not work.”
In one game between the two coaches – the 1998 CIF-Southern Section Division 2 championship final – Coach Roche’s Diamond Bar squad defeated Coach Monger’s Chino team, 21-19, after a late fourth-quarter bad snap clinched the title for Diamond Bar and ended Chino’s 26-game winning streak, which dated back to the previous season.
Although officially retiring from varsity football in 2007, Coach Roche returned to the sidelines with Coach Monger in 2013 and 2014 as freshman football coaches at Chino High School. In 2013, the Cowboys freshman team finished 6-0 to win the Mt. Baldy League championship.
Tributes
From Chino Hills High School football, “The Huskies are saddened by his loss, but grateful for the time he served as a teacher and a coach for the Huskies.”
Diamond Bar High posted, “our Brahma community is saddened by the passing of the legendary coach. Terry was known for his ability to get his teams to perform above and beyond their expectations.”
“Coach Roche leaves a lasting legacy with his classmates, former coaches, players and the great CIF-Southern Section community,” according to a tribute posted Monday by St. John Bosco officials.
“An amazing father, husband, coach, friend and family man earned his wings,” current Chino High head coach John Miller said. “Your legacy lives on through the thousands of lives you have influenced and impacted.”
Playing and
coaching career
Coach Roche graduated from St. John Bosco High School in 1969 and played two seasons for the Cerritos College football team as the Falcons’ starting offensive guard.
He then played two seasons at Long Beach State University before becoming a high school teacher and football coach.
Coach Roche worked at Ontario, Chowchilla, St. John Bosco, Diamond Bar and Chino Hills high schools, amassing a career record of 223-82-7.
His most successful stint came at Diamond Bar where his teams advanced to six CIF-Southern Section championship games, winning titles in 1984, 1995, 1998 and 1999.
He resigned as Diamond Bar’s varsity coach after 14 seasons in January 2001, and was hired as the first Chino Hills High head football coach a few months later.
Chino Hills High was open only to freshmen students that first year, and Coach Roche said he was excited to take on the challenge of starting the football program from scratch.
Junior varsity football was added the next year, and varsity football started in 2003, which still didn’t have senior-class students.
Despite any seniors, Coach Roche led the Huskies to the CIF-Southern Section playoffs that season.
He retired from coaching varsity football on Dec. 21, 2007.
Three years later, the coach was inducted into the Southern California Coaches Association as the Clare Van Hoorebeke award winner, given to “a coach who has made outstanding contributions to the game of football in Southern California.”
After receiving the award, Coach Roche said, “I’m totally humbled and overwhelmed. I’m appreciative of all the guys who have worked with me over the years, and my friends and family for all their support. I’m not too big on awards.
My awards come in the form of watching my players go on to become productive citizens.”
