LaLiga working to bring match to Miami – Sports Business Journal

LaLiga is “trying to get approval to play a match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Miami in December,” reigniting an effort the league first attempted “about five years ago.” The league said that Relevent Sports, its U.S. partner, is “working with FIFA to make sure the league is cleared to host the match outside of Spain.” Staging the match abroad is “part of the league’s goal of promoting soccer and its brand in other countries” as it hopes to “close the gap” on the Premier League. Plans five years ago to bring a LaLiga match to the U.S. were “scrapped after opposition by Spain’s soccer federation and the players’ union” (AP, 10/24). Miami is home to MLS club Inter Miami, where former Barcelona F Lionel Messi has driven up attendance not just in the South Florida city, but across the American soccer league. MLS attendance is up 5% from the 2023 season, while Inter Miami attendance is up 19% from 2023 (Alex Silverman, SBJ).
