New Delhi: Former West Indies all-rounder Sunil Narine, who is experiencing a remarkable season in the Indian Premier League, has confirmed that he won’t be reversing his decision of retirement ahead of the T20 World Cup beginning June 1 in the USA and West Indies.
Narine, who represents the Kolkata Knight Riders, is having a fantastic run in the IPL 2024 for his franchise with some stellar performances in the 17th edition of the league. The former WI all-rounder, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019, deciding to focus on the franchise T20 leagues around the globe, said that the the international return door is now closed.
The 35-year-old last played for the national side in a T20 match in August 2019 and since then, has just focused on the T20 leagues. Owing to hi sensation form in the current season, attempts were being made to convince the cricketer to reverse the retirement decision as he would have been a powerful resource for the team at the prestigious event.
“I’m truly flattered and humbled that my performances recently have moved many people to publicly express their wish for me to come out of retirement and play in the upcoming T20 World Cup,” Narine wrote in Instagram post.
He asserted that he has made peace with his decision and will be supporting the team from home.
“I have made peace with that decision and whilst I never wish to disappoint, that door is now closed and I will be supporting the guys who take the field in June for West Indies. Guys who have worked hard over the past few months and deserve to show our wonderful fans that they are capable of winning another title. I wish you all the best,” he added.
Narine has been in superb form for KKR in the premier tournament. In a total of seven games played till now, the West Indian has amassed 286 runs at a strike rate of 176.54 and an average of 40.86.
