LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Bullitt County football coach has been arrested on multiple charges.
Vernon Darren Lewis was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for several charges, including strangulation, assault, unlawful imprisonment and intimidating a participant in a legal process. The female victim is now speaking out to WDRB.
The Bullitt County sheriff said Lewis held the victim against their will for “quite some time.” He said the victim had bruises, and believes they have a strong case against him.
Bullitt County Schools’ superintendent said Lewis did not work for the district, but was a coach with the Mt. Washington Football and Cheer Association. The private organization is not associated with the school district.
A social media post from last year said he was the eighth grade head coach for the East Chargers Middle School Football Program, calling him a leader on and off the field.
The victim told WDRB News the incident happened Dec. 1 in the early mornings hours.
“There is no reason that any woman should have to defend herself after fighting for her life,” she said. “There is nothing I could’ve done to have warranted what has happened to me.”
Lewis was arraigned Wednesday and is expected to be back in court next week on the charges. Lewis couldn’t be reached for comment.
WDRB also reached out to the Mt. Washington Football and Cheer Association. No one has returned our message.
