If you still fondly remember Brandi Chastain scoring a PK to win the World Cup for the U.S. in 1999, get excited, because that action is coming to Denver!
Denver will be home to the National Women’s Soccer League‘s (NWSL) 16th franchise after submitting the first payment fee Tuesday (Jan. 2), according to a Sportico report.
The total expansion fee is $110 million, the report said, the largest expansion fee in women’s sports. The backers of the Denver bid, including IMA Financial Group chief executive officer Robert Cohen, submitted their first payment Tuesday, per the report.
Denver, Cleveland and Cincinnati were the finalists for the NWSL’s newest addition, and reports are that the new team will begin play in 2026.
Of the 18 players on the United States’ gold-medal team at the 2024 Summer Olympics, 14 played in the NWSL.
There is no word on what the club will be called or where they’ll play their home games yet.
