Fans at the University of Vermont are sending their support to the men’s soccer team after players scored their first ticket to compete in the NCAA College Cup.
The team will face off against the University of Denver in the semifinals on Friday. If they win, the Catamounts will advance to the championship round on Monday.
Meanwhile, back in Burlington, students are finishing up their fall semester and hoping to round it out with a historic championship win.
“It’s cool that UVM is going to the finals. I feel like we’re not really a big sports school, so it’s exciting when big sports things happen on campus,” Nolan Grant, a junior at UVM said.
It’s an unexpected turn of events for many students on campus, including Bella Bodmer, who’s wrapping up her first semester at the university.
“It’s pretty cool because before I came to UVM, I really didn’t think of UVM as a sports school,” Bodmer said. “So I guess it’s pretty exciting.”
But soccer fan Symbelle Sambou, accounting manager at the UVM bookstore, said, for her, this opportunity has been a long time coming.
“I gave up on watching any of the men’s soccer because of how they were playing before,” she said.
But now Sambou said she’s excited to watch the team make history and hopes they’ll bring up the championship trophy.
“This is a huge deal for the university and also for our soccer players to feel pride,” Sambou said. “They should be proud of themselves and what they’ve accomplished.”
The semifinal on Friday and the championship on Monday will both be played in Cary, North Carolina. NBC5’s Jack Main will have live coverage at the game on Friday.
