Former FIFA World Cup winner with Italy Claudio Gentile has offered a damning verdict on Sunday’s draw between Inter Milan and Juventus.
In his latest interview with Libero, as reported by FCInterNews, the ex-Bianconeri rearguard blasted both defenses following a goal-glutted stalemate at Giuseppe Meazza.
There was nothing to separate the arch-rivals at the final whistle in one of the most breathtaking Derby d’Italia encounters in the 21st century.
Juventus clawed back from a two-goal deficit to hold Inter to a 4-4 draw and uphold their unbeaten Serie A start under Thiago Motta.
However, neither side benefitted much from a point.
Table-topping Napoli seized the opportunity to move eight points clear of second-placed Inter on top of the standings.
Furthermore, both teams showed unfathomable flaws at the back despite boasting scintillating defensive record beforehand.
Inter finished their Scudetto-winning campaign last term as the division’s best defense.
Meanwhile, Juve had only conceded once from the opening eight league outings before letting in four goals on Sunday.
While the latest Derby d’Italia edition gained much traction abroad for the incredible scoreline, Gentile shares a different stance.
Instead of joining the praise for both teams’ attacking approach, he blasted their defensive set-ups.
“It’s not about spectacle; the defenders are asleep. In our league, we can enjoy the game,” Gentile said.
“But it’s because some defenders don’t know what marking means, leading to mistakes and goals.”
However, he refused to blame Simone Inzaghi and Motta.
Both managers lacked their crucial defensive components.
Francesco Acerbi was unavailable for Inter, while Gleison Bremer could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
“Of course, Simone Inzaghi and Thiago Motta didn’t have Francesco Acerbi and Bremer,” Gentile added.
Nonetheless, it was a remarkable derby that will go down in history as one of the most thrilling encounters between Inter and Juventus.
