Inter Milan legend Marco Materazzi would love to celebrate the club’s second star with a Derby della Madonnina victory over AC Milan.
The Nerazzurri are leading the Serie A table with 14 points separating them from their crosstown rivals. Therefore, only two wins stand between Simone Inzaghi’s men and what seems to be an inevitable triumph.
If Inter manage to skip past Cagliari this Sunday, they would be able to clinch the Scudetto with a Derby victory, much to the delight of their supporters, including Materazzi.
The 2006 World Cup winner is hoping for this scenario, as it would make for a historic occasion.
“I’m not interested in the points record. I prefer to win the title in the Derby,” said the 50-year-old in his interview with Sport Mediaset via FcInterNews.
“Records are made to be broken, but winning a championship in the derby would remain in the history books.”
Materazzi admitted that the current Inter team plays better football than his treble-winning side from 2009/10.
However, he believes Inzaghi’s men would have a hard time against Jose Mourinho’s old band.
”In my opinion, the present-day team plays better football, even if a match against us would be uncomfortable for them too.
“With all due respect to those who are writing the history of the second star, we had stars like Maicon, Zanetti, Cambiasso, Stankovic, Eto’o, Milito, Thiago Motta, Lucio, Samuel, Cordoba and Julio Cesar. But I have to say that Inzaghi’s men are playing good football.”
The retired defender also praised several of the club’s current stars. He’s also hoping that Lautaro Martinez signs a new contract soon.
“It would be a bit simplistic to single out one player just because everyone gave their contribution.
“From those who arrived last summer like Pavard or Frattesi, who every time he came on he scored and raised the Inter flag high. This is the beautiful thing about this team.
“Of course, I can say Lautaro Martinez. First of all, because I hope he signs a renewal soon, as I see how much he cares about the team. Also, because he is the one who wears the armband.
“I would also name Barella and Bastoni. I have a soft spot for the Italians because during my time there were only a few of us.
“One of my dreams was to see such an Italian core at Inter. Now we have four or five players in the national team and it’s the best part.”
Finally, Materazzi tackled the disappointing Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
“Yes, it was a disappointment, but it doesn’t take away what the team accomplished last season when they reached the final.
“Some said that they had arrived there by luck, but Inter were close to winning the match.
“In the defeat to Man City, Inter became aware of how strong they are, which is the most important thing.
“Unfortunately, this time we faced the most uncomfortable opponent. Atletico is a technical team that fights for every ball and never gives up, and we went out on penalties.”
