One of the marquee clashes of the group stage will be the one between India and Pakistan, who have both been drawn in Group A, alongside Ireland, USA and Canada. The rivals will play each other at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on June 9.
On Thursday morning, reports from the USA have stated that security around the venue has been tightened, in the wake of a threat received by Long Island authorities, of a ‘lone wolf attack’. i.e. a mass murder attempt in a public place by an individual.
As reported by CBS News, the authorities stated that they had found no evidence of a threat to the stadium, but would be taking precautions in any case. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman was quoted as saying,
Each and every day, Nassau County, as well as other communities and cities and counties and towns throughout the United States, receive all kinds of threats. We take every threat seriously.
To that end, we have taken many, many precautions. As well as making sure that the stadium and the surrounding Eisenhower Park are safe, the parking areas are safe, the watch areas are safe, we also are adding 100 additional police officers to our normal staffing for the rest of the county, just as a precaution.
Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder also added that this was ‘the largest security we’ve ever had to do in the county’s history. The ICC also released a statement on the issue, as a spokesperson said,
The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority and we have a comprehensive and robust security plan in place. We work closely with authorities in our host countries and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event.
The marquee India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match will take place on June 9 at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York. The match is scheduled to start at 8pm India time.
