After making nine starts for Iowa last season, quarterback Deacon Hill entered the transfer portal on Tuesday.
Hill, who transferred to Iowa last offseason from Wisconsin after originally committing to Fordham, completed 122-of-251 passes for 1,152 yards, five touchdowns, and eight interceptions in place of Cade McNamara, who went down with a season-ending injury at the start of the year.
Iowa has two scholarship quarterbacks currently on the roster in McNamara and Marco Lainez III. The Hawkeyes will bring in four-star quarterback James Resar this summer, and are also looking to add a quarterback via the transfer portal during the spring window.
“The biggest thing is him just trying to take in what he needs to take in,” Kirk Ferentz said of Hill in October of 2023. “Each week it’s a different challenge, different preparation. … He’s done a great job. He’s attentive. He’s a smart guy. That’s probably the key element for everything. I think he’s hearing the right things. It’s just a matter of every repetition is going to help him, and certainly game reps will help him too now.”
Iowa is now down to 88 scholarships and needs to be at 85 scholarships once fall camp starts in August.
