TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – 
Hopes for a first win for the Indonesian national football team in the third round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers were dispelled after a 2-2 draw against Bahrain on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Bahrain National Stadium in Riffa.
The Garuda Squad was ahead 2-1 after Rafael Struick scored a goal in the 74-minute mark. The scores remained up until the match entered its 96th minute, according to the six-minute injury time the referee announced from the sidelines. 
However, the win did not last as Oman national referee Ahmed Al Kaf let the game continue past its designated time, allowing Bahrain to score a second goal, ending the match in a draw. 
At the 99-minute mark, nine minutes into injury time, Bahrain’s Mohamed Marhoon succeeded in scoring the team’s second goal from a corner kick. 
Shin Tae-yong laments the match result
Indonesian National Team coach, Shin Tae-yong, lamented the Indonesia-Bahrain draw. 
“Both teams did their best until the referee whistled at the last minute. But still, I have to mention some (shameful things) regarding the referee’s decision. If AFC wants to develop, the referee’s decision also has to be improved,” the coach said during a post-match press conference in Bahrain, as quoted from PSSI’s YouTube channel.
Nevertheless, he added, he appreciated the squad’s hard work and hoped the players would remain optimistic about their next qualifier match.
“About the additional minutes, it was supposed to be 6 minutes but (extended) for more than 9 minutes. The referee’s decision was biased. I think everybody knows why our players get angry,” the 53-year-old coach said.
With the recent draw, Indonesia remained in the fifth spot with three points, falling behind Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, which reside in second to fourth positions, respectively. Only the two top teams proceed to the 2026 World Cup. 
Indonesia will face China next on Tuesday, October 15, while Bahrain plays against Saudi Arabia.
