As the deadline for announcing the provisional squad for the T20 World Cup approaches, India’s possible squad for the 2024 edition is fast becoming a hot talking point. Various media reports have claimed that at least ten players have been earmarked as a sure-shot selection in the squad while there are still quite a few spots up for grabs. It is interesting to note that since the World Cup is happening in the West Indies and the USA, India could be traveling with a jumbo squad – taking five additional players apart from the 15-member squad.
Since the inaugural edition in 2007, India have failed to win the silverware and made it to the final only once after that – in 2014 in Bangladesh where they lost to Sri Lanka. In the last edition in Australia in 2022, India were blown away in the semi-final by eventual winners England. who handed them a 10-wicket drubbing.

Interestingly, at least seven members from India’s 2022 T20 World Cup squad could very well be on their way to the Caribbean this time around, while at least eight from that squad have fallen out of favour or are sidelined with injuries. Here’s a look at the players part of India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad, who could miss selection in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
India’s T20 World Cup Squad Update: 10 Players Confirmed, Close Fight for Remaining Five Spots
First of all, the makeup of India’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad was this:
Rohit Sharma (C), KL Rahul (VC), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Harshal Patel
From the above squad, the skipper Rohit Sharma will travel to the Caribbean at the same capacity while Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh are more or less certain to feature in this edition as well barring any injuries.

However, players like Deepak Hooda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Harshal Patel have fallen out of favour with the selectors and are not even in the fray to be selected for the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. Ravichandran Ashwin, who was part of the 2022 edition is also likely to miss the cut with the resurgence of Kuldeep Yadav. Axar Patel found a place in the 2022 edition largely because Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the competition. This time around though Jadeja is fit and even though he has not set the IPL 2024 stage on fire with his performance, it is more or less certain that the Saurashtra all-rounder will make the squad.

One interesting name though is that of Yuzvendra Chahal, who despite being India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is and the winner of the Purple Cap in 2022 has not played a single T20 World Cup for India. He was not picked for the 2020 and even though he was picked for the 2022 edition, bizarrely enough he did not feature in the playing XI all throughout the tournament. This time around though, Chahal remains in contention albeit as the second specialist spinner behind Kuldeep. With Jadeja already there are the spin bowling, it could prove to be yet another heartbreak for the Haryana bowler. But only time will tell whether he makes it or not

Another name set to miss out is pacer Mohammad Shami, who is out with an injury and has undergone surgery and as confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, his possible return date will be around the Bangladesh Test. However, Jasprit Bumrah, who was injured during the 2022 edition, will be in the 2024 squad, alongside Mohammad Siraj, who will take Harshal Patel’s place in the previous squad.
One other name that could miss out from the 2022 squad is Dinesh Karthik. But with the kind of form he is in for RCB as a finisher, it will be very intriguing to see if DK’s final mad dash earns him a spot this year as well. But it is highly unlikely for India to go back to the veteran considering they have a healthy pool of in-form finishers to pick from – Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag and Rinku Singh. Add to that the name of Sanju Samson, who could also sneak in as the backup wicketkeeper option ahead of Karthik.
Rohit Sharma (C), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya (VC), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammad Siraj, Avesh Khan, Sanju Samson (WK), Shubman Gill
