With Rohit Sharma the captain of the Indian T20I team and Hardik Pandya more or less confirmed as vice-captain, we could see the power duo of Rohit and Kohli opening for team India again for the T20 World Cup
As the deadline for announcing the provisional squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup nears, the debate over who will make the cut in India’s squad for the biennial event is heating up. After reports that the Indian think comprising chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid had a meeting to discuss the team selection, new insights from the meeting have emerged hinting that the Indian management could go with Rohit and Virat Kohli as the openers, meaning upstart Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill could be snubbed.
As per a report in Dainik Jagaran, Kohli has sought clarity on where the management stands about his chances to be selected in India’s T20 World Cup squad. That puts a spanner in the works for both Rajasthan Royals’ Jaiswal, who despite a stellar Test series against England earlier this, has struggled to get going in IPL 2024 this year. Gill, on the other hand, who regularly opened the innings for India in T20Is with Rohit Sharma could very well be relegated as the backup opener. In IPL 2024, Gill has so far 255 runs from six matches striking at 151.78, and is currently in the 6th position in the IPL 2024 Orange Cap list. Jaiswal in the seven matches has managed only 121 runs at 17.29.
Assam’s Riyan Parag who is having a solid IPL 2024 season so far with Rajasthan Royals, scoring 318 runs in seven matches, striking 161.42 could earn a ticket as the middle-order enforcer along with Chennai Super Kings Shivam Dube. Dube has had a transformational season with CSK clobbering 242 runs in 6 matches, striking at 163.51, and has played a vital role as a finisher for CSK. A similar role can be expected from him for the Indian team if he makes it to the XI.
