All the updates as Cricket World Cup hosts India beat defending champions England in Lucknow.
This blog is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between India and England on October 29:
There you have it from Lucknow.
On a challenging pitch, India managed to scrape their way to a middling total of 229, thanks largely to Rohit’s superb 87, which would have been equivalent to 100-125 on any other pitch.
England looked to be in a great position to pick up a win to boost their semifinal hopes, but that was quickly turned around thanks to some disciplined bowling by India’s seamers, which was backed up by the spinners as well.
They ended up crashing to 129 all out as India came away with a victory which will surely galvanise the team as we head into the business end of the tournament.
India next face Sri Lanka on November 2, while England face old adversaries, Australia, on November 4 in what is undoubtedly a must-win match.
On behalf of Patrick Keddie and Kevin Hand, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.
Rohit, who is adjudged the player of the match, had this to say: “Looking at where we were after the first 10 overs, it was important to create a partnership, which myself and KL [Rahul] did.”
“It wasn’t about just playing my shots, but also using my experience. It was necessary to take the game as deep as possible and try to get to a decent total,” he said.
“I still felt like we were 30-40 runs short, but overall it was a great performance. I’ll take that win any day.”
Rohit Sharma won POTM award for his marvelous 87.

This was a bowling performance of the highest order as India remain the sole undefeated team in the tournament.
With this result, they displace South Africa at the top of the standings with 12 points in six matches.
England had a great chance at winning this match at the interval and Buttler will have much to contemplate as their side’s chances of progression look even more scant.
Bumrah goes short and Willey punishes him by hooking him high over deep fine leg for half a dozen.
But it doesn’t matter much as Bumrah yorks Wood to end the match once and for all.
Shami is back on but doesn’t quite have his radar in check as he strays down the leg side and is subsequently helped along to the fine leg boundary by Rashid.
The pacer goes for back-to-back bouncers which Rashid tries to pull behind square, but both are wided by the umpire.
Rashid follows up with a stand-and-deliver cover drive which screams to the boundary.
But Shami has the last laugh as he picks up his fourth by bowling Rashid all ends up.
With that, No 11 Mark Wood makes his way to the middle with an almighty task on his hands.
Bumrah is back on and is greeted rather unceremoniously by Willey with a hoick over deep mid-wicket for six.
Willey goes again after a shortish length but ends up finding the fielder at deep square leg.
Rashid ends up toe-ending a chance to short third man off the final ball but just survives the fielder’s diving effort.
England take eight off the over as they are still 118 runs away from the target.
Willey and Rashid manage two off Kuldeep’s over as they will want to try and bat out as many overs as possible from a net run rate perspective.
Jadeja has been phenomenal with the ball as he allows just the one run.
It caps off what has been an outstanding bowling performance from India so far.
Kuldeep allows just three singles off the over as England scrape their way past 100.
Will be interesting to see if Rohit decides to bring back one of his pacers shortly to try and finish off the tail.
Kuldeep traps Livingstone LBW, with the umpire raising his finger straight away.
The batter is not convinced and elects to review the decision.
This is England’s last review of the innings.
Ultra Edge confirms no contact and ball tracking shows it is hitting the stumps.
Rashid makes his way out to join Willey.
After the first-ball strike, Jadeja completes a wicket maiden as England have a lot left to do with just three wickets remaining.
Jadeja entices Woakes with a shortish length which has him coming down the track.
However, he fails to make contact as Rahul expertly whips off the bails behind to make it seven down for England.
Willey is the new batsman for England.
Shami earns a breather as Kuldeep is drafted back in by Rohit.
He has troubled Livingstone so this will be an important period of play for England’s batters.
The spinner does well to restrain the batsmen to just four runs as the required rate has now ticked to six an over.
Jadeja continues to exercise control from his end as England pick off three from the over.
Shami pitches one up and Woakes leans into a textbook drive which finds the boundary at deep extra cover.
That may very well be first four he has given up, which is a testament to the spell he has bowled so far.
In the end, England accumulate seven from the over.
Jadeja is playing his part beautifully as he continues to keep it tight on one end as India’s fast men probe at the other.
Woakes is very capable of scoring runs, but it is all about keeping his wicket intact at the moment.
The pacer is just relentless with his line and length as he closes out yet another maiden over.
Shami currently has figures of 3 for 5 after five overs, which is something you might expect to see in a Test match, let alone an ODI World Cup match.
Shami is back on, and it is like he never left, as he gets Ali to edge one behind to pick up his third wicket!
Another big wicket for India as Ali is quite adept at shepherding the tail in a run chase.
England are sinking in Lucknow as the lower order is now firmly exposed.
With that, a rather anxious Woakes makes his way to the middle.
Jadeja continues to keep it tight as he surrenders just two runs.
Livingstone gets down on one knee to paddle-sweep the fourth ball towards long leg.
Siraj, who is stationed nearby, is able to get to the ball, but ends up letting it through to the boundary after failing to rein it in.
Seven useful runs come off the over for England.
The batsmen are content to work Jadeja around for singles as they recognise this important passage of play.
Rohit may persist a bit longer with spin before reintroducing Shami or Bumrah to try and make some additional inroads.
Kuldeep has Livingstone guessing as he plays all around one which pitches outside off.
He completely misses it, but fortunately for the batsman, the ball evades the stumps.
Rohit decides Siraj has been exposed enough as he turns to Jadeja to make it spin at both ends.
The left-arm spinner does well to restrict the batsmen to three off the over.
Kuldeep continues to weave his magic as he keeps the batsmen to just three off the over.
England’s former captain says a series of bad decisions has hit confidence, but backs skipper Jos Buttler to stay on.
While the cricketing rivalry has often been bitter and influenced by colonial history, it has changed in recent years.
Smaller countries hope cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics can be a game changer for the sport.
